Whisper to Make Channel 5 Doc: Ferguson v Wenger

Whisper has been commissioned by Channel 5 to make what promises to be one of the most explosive sports documentaries of 2018 – exposing the huge rivalry between Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger.

The hour-long programme, focuses on one of the longest running disputes in football between the then Manchester United manager and his Arsenal counter- part, and will feature exclusive first hand accounts from their dressing rooms.

Produced and Directed by Chris Grubb, who was Executive Producer for BBC1’s Alan Shearer’s When Football Came Home, it will feature interviews with former Manchester United players Paul Scholes, Andrew Cole and Phil Neville and Arsenal’s Lee Dixon, Martin Keown, Sol Campbell and Emmanuelle Petit. Former England manager Steve McClaren, who was an assistant at Old Trafford between 1999 and 2001, will also contribute to the programme.

Manchester United and Arsenal dominated English football for a decade in the 1990s and early 2000s and between them won 16 Premier League titles from 1993 to 2013.

Executive Producers for The Feud are Mark Cole, former Head of Football at BBC MOTD, and Sunil Patel, who produced Whisper Films’ highly acclaimed BBC1 documentary Racing With The Hamiltons.

Mark Cole said: “The story of the rivalry between Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger is one of the most gripping in sport and there’s some real insight that will get football fans talking. This is getting right to the heart of the drama of sport and we are delighted that Channel 5 have commissioned us to make the programme”.

The Feud is just one of three documentaries Whisper Films have been working on in recent months, along with Business of Formula E, which premiered in Hong Kong earlier this month, and a horse racing documentary that will also TX in 2018.

Channel 5 Commissioning Editor, Sean Doyle, said: ““Manchester United and Arsenal players in the late 90’s and early 2000’s went toe-to-toe in the last great footballing rivalry English football has seen. These players on the park were driven by the two men at the top of both clubs, Sir Alex and Arsene Wenger, and it is the feud between the two managers that has never really been unpicked before, until now. Whisper Films are the perfect company to tell this story and shine new light on what really went on behind the scenes in North London and Old Trafford.”

The Channel 5 commission caps off an excellent 2017 for the flourishing independent sports production company, which has enjoyed another successful year of Formula One coverage on Channel 4. The NFL coverage won an RTS Award for Best Presenter, while Whisper also delivered Channel 4’s ground-breaking coverage of the Women’s European Championships, which attracted a peak audience of 4.3 million and over 15.7 million across the tournament.

Sunil Patel, one of the co-owners of Whisper Films, added: “This has been a great year for Whisper Films with big audiences coming to our coverage and capped off with two Broadcast Best Sport’s Programme nominations for our Women’s Euros and NFL output. 2018 is now going to get off to a fantastic start with this Channel 5 documentary, the Super Bowl programming, the BBC’s Women’s Six Nations, our innovative Winter Paralympics coverage and the start of the F1 season.”
